thom's tour diary
SUNDAY AUGUST 6TH
SICILY
SPEND THE WHOLE MORNING DISPLAYING MY LILYWHITE BODY AND RED HAIR TO GAWPING SICILIAN POPULACE. THE SHOW IS AT A SPORTS STADIUM. UTTER CHAOS PERMEATES EVERY CORNER OF THE PROCEEDINGS. I SOAK UP THE BURNING MEDITERRANIAN SUN AND WAIT FOR THE FIRST MURMURS FROM MOUNT ETNA. BRIEFLY WONDER WHAT THE SICILLIAN IS FOR “FUCK ME SILLY BUT DON’T TELL YOUR BROTHERS”. ONE MINUTE BEFORE STAGE TIME WE FIND OUESELVES STUCK IN TRAFFIC. MICHEAL STIPE TELLS ME TO “BREATHE, BREATHE” LIKE IM HAVING A BABY WHILE HUNDREDS OF POLICE STAND ROUND AND DO NOTHING.

thom on songwriting
WHAT HAPPENS A LOT WITH SONGWRITING IS THAT A MELODY OR RHYTHM OR SOMETHING STAYS WITH YOU LIKE CATCHING A COLD. AND DURING THAT TIME WHAT HAPPENS IS THAT I CAN THEN FIT THINGS ON TO IT, IT ALL FITS AND GLUES TOGETHER. SOMETIMES IT’S CRAZY ‘COS IT CAN ALMOST BE ANYTHING. BUT IF YOU CATCH THE COLD THEN THE NONSENSE MAKES SENSE. IT’S LIKE YOU’RE GETTING BEAMED IT, LIKE WITH A OUIJA BOARD AND SOMETHING’S PUSHING YOUR HAND. IT’S NOT A PLEASANT EXPERIENCE NECESSARILY.

Colin: I think it's called 'Movements' [by Roots Manuva], but I only heard it two nights ago, so I don't have a clue about anything to do with it, except Ed knows the record really well so...
Thom: Do you?
Ed: Yeah, well you remember my birthday night when we got completely...
Thom: Yeah, I remember.
Ed: That was the record, you wouldn't remember, that was the record that was playing.
Thom: Really?
Ed: That was the soundtrack.
Colin: No-one remembers it, Ed's like 'I played that to you', it's like...
Thom: I remember you disco dancing down the garden and chucking up everywhere.
Ed: Please...
NOBODY WAS MORE IMPRESSED WITH JAPAN THAN THOM. HE WAS LOST IN AN IDEAL WORLD WHERE HE TOWERED OVER PEOPLE AND CLOTHES FITTED HIM. HE ALSO DEVELOPED A TOTAL FASCINATION FOR JAPANESE TV, FILMING IT FOR MANY AN INSOMNIACAL HOUR. NURSING A STRING OF SAKI HANGOVERS, ED O’BRIEN BECAME EDO BRIEN AS THE JAPANESE FANS GOT CONFUSED AS TO WHERE TO STICK THE ‘O’.
